Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, commonly known as Lap. Chole, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the gallbladder.
The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that sits just under the liver. Its main function is to store bile, a digestive fluid that helps break down fats in the intestines. Bile is produced by the liver and flows into the small intestine when needed for digestion. When the body is not digesting food, bile is stored in the gallbladder.
There are several conditions that may necessitate the removal of the gallbladder: Gallstones, Cholecystitis, Biliary Dyskinesia, Choledocholithiasis, Gallbladder and Polyps.
Laparoscopic surgery uses small incisions (usually four) rather than a large open incision, resulting in less trauma to the body and a faster recovery.
Patients who undergo Lap. Chole can typically return to their normal activities within one to two weeks, compared to four to six weeks with open surgery.
The smaller incisions used in laparoscopic surgery cause less post-operative pain, reducing the need for strong pain medications.
Many patients are discharged the same day or within 24 hours after surgery, whereas open surgery requires a longer hospital stay.
Laparoscopic surgery reduces the risk of infection, blood loss, and other complications compared to traditional open surgery.
The tiny incisions used in laparoscopic surgery result in minimal scarring, which is more cosmetically pleasing than the larger scar associated with open surgery.
Although rare, infections can occur at the incision sites or within the abdomen. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent or treat infections.
Some bleeding may occur during or after the surgery, but this is typically minimal. In rare cases, additional surgery may be required to control the bleeding.
A rare but serious complication of Lap. Chole is injury to the bile ducts, which can cause leakage of bile into the abdomen and require further surgery to repair.
At TAH Global Healthcare, we take every precaution to minimise these risks by employing the latest surgical techniques and providing personalised care for each patient.
Assess symptoms like upper abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting.
Review any history of gallstones or digestive issues.
Detect gallstones, blockages, or inflammation in the gallbladder.
Use CT scans or MRIs for detailed views of the gallbladder and ducts.
Mild pain or discomfort around the incision sites and shoulders (from the gas used to inflate the abdomen) is common but usually subsides within a few days. Pain medication may be prescribed to manage any discomfort.
Patients should avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activities, or exercise for at least 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. Walking and light activities are encouraged to promote circulation and healing.
Most patients can resume a normal diet after surgery, but it is advisable to avoid fatty, greasy, or spicy foods for a few weeks to allow the digestive system to adjust to the absence of the gallbladder.
The incision sites should be kept clean and dry to prevent infection. Patients should follow their surgeon’s instructions regarding showering and wound care.
A follow-up appointment is typically scheduled a week or two after surgery to check the incision sites and ensure the patient is healing well.
Most patients who undergo gallbladder removal (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) lead normal, healthy lives without long-term dietary restrictions. However, to maintain optimal digestive health, patients should focus on a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. It is advisable to avoid high-fat or fried foods, particularly in the weeks following surgery, to prevent digestive discomfort.
Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water also helps with digestion and can prevent constipation, which can occasionally occur post-surgery.
