Cystoscopy is a medical procedure that allows healthcare providers to examine the bladder and urethra using a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera and light source, known as a cystoscope.
There are two main types of cystoscopy
This procedure uses a thin, flexible cystoscope that is easier to manoeuvre and is often performed in an outpatient setting. It is typically used for diagnostic purposes and minor treatments.
A rigid cystoscope is used for more complex procedures and can accommodate various surgical instruments. This type of cystoscopy may be performed in a hospital setting and is often used for therapeutic interventions.
A thorough medical history review and physical examination are conducted to assess the patient's overall health and suitability for the procedure.
Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all medications and supplements they are taking. Some medications, particularly blood thinners, may need to be adjusted before the procedure.
Depending on whether sedation will be used, patients may be advised to fast for a few hours before the procedure.
At TAH Global Healthcare, we take every precaution to minimise these risks by employing the latest surgical techniques and providing personalised care for each patient.
There is a risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) following cystoscopy. Antibiotics may be prescribed as a preventive measure.
Some bleeding from the urethra or bladder is common, but excessive bleeding should be reported to a healthcare provider.
In rare cases, patients may experience difficulty urinating after the procedure, which may require further evaluation.
Although extremely rare, there is a risk of injury to the bladder or urethra during the procedure.
Cystoscopy can be performed under local anaesthesia (to numb the urethra) or sedation, depending on the patient’s comfort level and the complexity of the procedure.
The patient is positioned comfortably on an examination table, usually lying on their back with their legs placed in stirrups.
The healthcare provider gently inserts the cystoscope through the urethra into the bladder. A sterile saline solution is often used to fill the bladder, providing a clearer view.
The doctor examines the bladder lining and urethra using the camera on the cystoscope. The findings are viewed on a monitor in real-time.
If abnormalities are detected, the doctor may perform a biopsy or other therapeutic procedures using instruments passed through the cystoscope.
Once the examination and any necessary procedures are completed, the cystoscope is carefully removed, and the patient is taken to the recovery area.
Long-term care and follow-up are important after undergoing cystoscopy, as patients may need additional appointments to discuss results and explore further treatment options if necessary. Key aspects of this care include regular check-ups, which help monitor for any recurring issues based on the initial reason for the procedure.
Patients are also advised to remain attentive to any new or worsening symptoms, reporting these promptly to their healthcare provider. Maintaining a healthy diet and staying well-hydrated can support urinary tract health and reduce the risk of complications.
